Adaptive Music

Jefferson’s Adaptive Music program is a general music class geared towards students in our special education program. This program explores the fun and joy of the world of music. Many of Jefferson’s general education students serve as mentors for students that participate in this class.

Opus Honor Choir Auditions

A prestigious opportunity, Opus Honor Choir Auditions are open to 9th grade students. Students prepare and send in an audio audition. The 180 9th grade singers across Iowa are accepted into the honor choir held at Iowa State University in November.

All-State Chorus Auditions

One of the highest honors an Iowa High School vocal music student can achieve is acceptance into the annual Iowa All-State Chorus. The auditions are open to 9-12 grade students. To prepare for the audition, students learn seven to eight music pieces beginning in August of each year. They, along with 4,000 to 5,000 other musicians across the state, then audition in groups of two to four in front of a choral judge. At the conclusion of the audition day, 600 of the best choral musicians in the state are selected every year to perform at the All State Music Festival in November.

State Solo and Small Ensemble Festival

Individuals and groups from our choirs can elect to bring a solo, duet, small group, or small choir to perform in front of a judge for a rating and feedback.

State Large Group Festival

Jefferson Singers, Bella Voce and Meistersingers perform as a part of this event yearly in the spring. Choirs receive a rating from choral judges who provide valuable feedback on challenging performance repertoire.

Musical

Open to all students at Jefferson High School in the spring, the annual musical is a collaborative production with the Jefferson Theatre and Band departments. This 2025 musical is “Between the Lines” and will show in the Jefferson Auditorium on May 15-17.
