At Jefferson High School, we believe that failure is not an option and all students can reach high levels of learning when provided with the structure, nurturing, and support they need to become academically successful and productive citizens in our community. We strive to close the achievement gap by increasing the number of underrepresented groups in advanced placement courses, as well as raising the proficiency of all students in math, reading, and science.

A few reasons why it’s great to be a J-Hawk:

  • The BlendED Academy serves students of all abilities. In BlendED, students complete three core classes, participate in student-led projects, and receive individualized instruction with direct support of their teachers
  • Our academic decathlon teams are consistent state champions, having represented Iowa at nationals 21 straight years, finishing in the top three in the nation six times
  • Jefferson students have access to a wide selection of challenging advanced placement (AP) courses
  • We are one of eight schools in Iowa to be recognized for the quality of our physical education programs
  • Jefferson students can participate in a wide variety of arts: Westside Delegation show choir, Band of Blue marching band, and theatre productions
  • Our staff goes above and beyond to do whatever it takes for all of our students to succeed. From those that excel to those that struggle, everyone is given the opportunity to achieve!

Jefferson has an active parent teacher student association to provide scholarships and produce a variety show each year. Our booster group donates over $100,000 annually to our school, in addition to hundreds of volunteer hours. Performing art parents’ volunteer groups provide invaluable assistance in supporting student activities. There are dozens of opportunities for families and community members to be involved.

Jefferson provides unique and lasting educational opportunities for every student that walks through our doors so they are college and career ready. We provide expanded opportunities to eighth graders so they may start advanced math, science, and world language courses a year earlier. We serve a growing population of English language learners with an immersive curriculum that allows all J-Hawks to share one another’s cultures and experiences. Every year multiple exchange students from all over Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America participate not only in academics, but also in the community and culture that is uniquely J-Hawk.
