Family and consumer sciences courses

Food fundamentals and nutrition

Available to 10th to 12th graders; students will focus on nutrition, measurements, kitchen safety, food safety, cooking methods, collaboration, and time management. Students will learn to follow recipes and prepare foods.

Culinary techniques (Food 2)

Prerequisite: food fundamentals and nutrition; available to 10th to 12th graders; students will explore careers, cooking methods, knife cuts, garnishes, spices, sauces, soups, salads, food science principles, menu planning, and extend what they learned in food fundamentals and nutrition

Fashion design and sewing

Available to ninth to 12th graders; students will cover units in fashion history, careers in fashion, color schemes, sketchbook creation, elements of design, principles of design, hand sewings, machine sewing

Interior design

Available to ninth to 12th graders; students will cover units in architectural features, design styles, floor plans, universal design, furniture arrangement, types of furniture, color schemes, elements of design, principles of design, and careers in design

Personal development

Available to ninth to 12th graders; students will cover units in values, communication, self-esteem, relationships, careers, goals/decision making, leadership, stress management, and employability skills

Early childhood development

Available to ninth to 12th graders; students will cover units in guidance techniques, health and safety, developmental disabilities, and physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers

School age child development

Available to ninth to 12th graders; students will cover units in guidance strategies, benefits of play, methods of learning, family dynamics, and physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development of 5 to 12-year-olds

Child development internship

Available to 10th to 12th graders; students will have the opportunity to intern off campus and work with students and teachers, including at child care centers and elementary schools

ProStart I, II, and internship

These courses are an in-depth look of the restaurant and food service industry.

Kirkwood Hospitality Careers Academy

This program offers a career focus in hotel management, lodging and tourism, club and spa management, event planning, culinary arts, or other hospitality-related careers. Learn more on Kirkwood’s website.
